Santa Barbara

Dane Goodman has recently been honored by being selected as a Master Artist. Focus on the Masters is a unique program based in Ventura, CA that recognizes and honors contemporary artists in a variety of media through a yearlong program of celebration, documentation and preservation of their work. His compelling, videotaped interview in front of a live audience took place on October 28, 2018

Also in 2018, Dane was included in the prestigious exhibit at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art “Summer Nocturne: Works on Paper from the 1970s.” Inspired by several large drawings in the Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibit demonstrated a variety of experimental practices during the 1970s and represent images and issues relevant to contemporary art and culture. Also included in the exhibit were Huguette Caland, Luchita Hurtado, Tom Marioni & Marie Schoeff.

Dane Goodman was born in Chicago and grew up in Lincoln, Illinois. Earning his BA from Western Illinois University, he then attended the Center for the Visual Arts, Illinois State University, before moving to Sacramento, to receive his MA from California State University. There he studied with Jim Nutt, Oliver L. Jackson and Stephen Kaltenbach.  In the late 70’s, he moved to New York City, in support of his wife, artist Marie Schoeff, who was there pursuing her MFA at Hunter College. During that time, he exhibited his installations, sculptures, drawings, and photographs, throughout New York’s art circuit. In 1983, he and his wife opted to return to California, ultimately settling in Santa Barbara.

His earlier abstract three-dimensional works are often sculpted out of wood and finished with rich patinated stains of color that invites a caressing and manual investigation. These sculptures are grounded by an inscrutable connection to familiar forms, shapes, and feelings, index the physical and the spiritual, the celestial and the mundane, the real and the imagined.

Many of the shapes and symbols that contour his sculptures also appear in the works on paper. Goodman’s collections of work on paper effectively encompass the artist’s concerns for physical presence, evidence of process, and discursive ambiguity, albeit collapsed into a two-dimensional format. In his drawings and prints, his superior treatment of texture and composition lures one’s focus to the rich surface of the paper. Attention to the two-dimensional elements is countered by illusionistic explorations of depth and space that lend the works a decidedly physical presence.

Dane Goodman works in a broad range of media, from installation to printmaking.  He has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States including New York, NY, Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, Phoenix, AZ, and Seattle, WA. In Santa Barbara, his work has been exhibited at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum; the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College’s Atkinson Gallery; Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art (Santa Barbara News Press review: ); as well as the galleries Jane Deering, Ro Snell, and Sullivan Goss. His work is in area museum collections and numerous private and civic collections including the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art; the Art, Design and Architecture Museum, UCSB; and the Berkus Contemporary Art Collection in the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission.

Goodman has been a lecturer and artist-in-residence at museums, colleges, universities, and workshops in California, New Mexico, and the Midwest. He has been nominated for the National Award in the Visual Arts and the Friends of Contemporary Art Award in Los Angeles by James Elaine of the Hammer Museum. His work has been featured in Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine and reviewed in such publications as Art LTD, Artweek, and Appearances.  He is a recipient of the County of Santa Barbara Individual Artist Award and has twice been invited as a panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts, Washington DC.

He collaborated with the artist Keith Puccinelli on two major projects: at Jane Deering Gallery, the other at Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art. The former has a catalog with essay by David Pagel, Los Angeles Times art critic and the latter has an essay by Los Angeles based Christopher Miles, artist, curator/writer.

While Goodman was the director of the Atkinson Gallery, Santa Barbara City College, he curated numerous solo and group exhibitions of artists from the Santa Barbara and Ventura region as well as New York and Los Angeles. He has also curated area artists’ exhibitions at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (now the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara) and the College of Creative Studies Gallery, UCSB.

Through his agency, CARDINAL, he published a new print edition for Southern California artist Laura Krifka. Prints from that edition entered the collection of the area art museums.
